Course Description

In this workshop, we’re going to explore how to capture the magic of light in still life and interiors. We’ll explore the technical techniques behind modelling objects, colour mixing, and composition. I’ll also focus on how we can capture the feeling of our eyes following the light through a painting in brush strokes, translucency, and thickly applied paint.

Course Outline

DAY 1 · Composition and colour mixing - setting up our first still life, drawing, colour mixing, and initial paint application. Homework: Trying your own still life under natural or artificial life.

DAY 2 - Completion of the still life started on previous day, a chance for questions and reviewing concepts learned. Homework: Trying your own still life under natural or artificial life.

DAY 3- Critiques of select artwork together for discussion, and beginning our interior painting using a laundry room. Homework: finding an interior space to paint and initial sketches.

DAY 4- Drawing, colour mixing, and initial paint application specific to interiors, covering additional new techniques such as temperature shifts, light in an interior, and saving your darks. Homework: Your first pass for drawing, colour mixing, and applying under layer for your interior.

DAY 5- Completion of the laundry room painting and associated techniques. Final critiques of everyone's interior will be recorded on video and sent out after completion of course. Homework: Completing your interior painting!
